How Are You Keeping Fit in Lockdown Three?

In the United Kingdom, the population is living under lockdown restrictions for the third time since the beginning of the global pandemic with simple stay-at-home instruction. This has resulted in the closure of much of the economy with only essential businesses open.

Amongst the long list of businesses that are closed include gyms, which had briefly re-opened following the end of the first lockdown before being forced to shut once again. This has meant the need to getting back into the home fitness regime that many of us had become accustomed to during the early stages of the pandemic.

Whereas some opted for online workouts (such as YouTube videos of HIIT sessions) they could follow along with during the morning, on their lunch break, or in the evening, others invested in gym equipment to aid their workout. The lockdown also saw an increase in the number of people running, with exercise being one of the few reasons why you were allowed out of the house.

Staying Motivated

As the weeks and months have worn on, and the announcement of a third national lockdown to kickstart 2021, motivation has understandably waned for many people. Getting and staying motivated is the key to keeping on track with your fitness goals, but never before have we had to contend with such difficult conditions as we are right now.

If you are fortunate to be living in a household with other people, then encourage them to become your fitness buddies as, when you have someone else working to exercise with, you are more likely to stick to your regime. Should this not be an option, setting small manageable goals is the way forward as opposed to one long-term goal that can feel a long way away.

As well as all this, allowing yourself rest/cheat days is a must – especially considering the current situation. Do not be too hard on yourself when you have a bad day because you are not alone. Write the day off and get back on the horse tomorrow.

Varied Home Workouts

When we find a home workout that works for us, we stick with it believing that this is the only way forward. This is a mistake that many people have made as, sooner or later, you will grow tired of your workout if there is no variety in it and will find yourself coming up with reasons why you can’t or shouldn’t exercise.

Keep your workouts fun and target different areas of the body. For example, if your goal is to build muscle through a home workout then train different areas of the body each day. Make Monday your arms day, Tuesday your back day, Wednesday your leg day and Thursday your chest day.

You should also incorporate a variety of cardio and strength training into your workouts, even if you are primarily focused on one or the other.

New Workout Gear

If you need just a little extra motivation to kickstart your lockdown fitness regime then why not treat yourself to new workout gear? This will give you an excuse to wear your new ensemble and get you in the correct frame of mind needed to bust out a workout that will leave you feeling great afterward as those endorphins begin to kick in.

It may not seem like much, but in this current time we need to make the most of the small things – after all, buying new workout gear is one of the few things that we can control right now.

No matter how much or little you are working out in this third lockdown, we hope that you are staying safe and staying positive. Before we know it, the doors to the gym will open once more and we can train as we did before the madness set in.
